VE vs. GE

Post by sprocky »

For my recent AFCAD updates I used flashearth.com to choose between different map providers. While searching for Aviano AB I used Google Maps first and switched to Virtual Earth when Google could not provide images (happens quite often that Google cannot provide images these days). Seems that Microsoft started to eliminate military bases from its images as you will see some cornfields only when getting closer to the base. Zoom slowly to the air base and it will disappear suddenly. But its done so bad you could even see the copied'n'pasted parts  Just noticed that they forgot to eliminate some parts. See here:

N 46° 1' 9,2"
E 12° 34' 40,1"

This is really ridiculous.

Jan, Try Google Earth, no breaks there, same tiles than in Google Maps and ... I see Aviano in full:

Dont want to install Google Earth. But Google Maps work now.

I checked out other mil bases and found LIED, LIPC and LIPL deleted in VE. Grosseto is still there (although you will find F-104's here only). This seems to be special for Italy as I have found bases in other countries in VE were they are located in real life.

I've found all the military bases in the Netherlands seem to be blurred out on Google Earth, but I've not noticed it anywhere else yet.
Where did I put my beer??!

I have searched for almost all Italian air bases. Most of them are clearly visible in Google or Yahoo maps but have been covered with cropfields or a forest in Virtual Earth. In some cases you will notice nothing but in many cases it has been covered so bad.
