First C-27J Turned over to US Military

Post by ronniegj »

According to a video report broadcast this afternoon on my local station 10 (KWTX-TV), the first C-27J had completed modifications by L3 Communications at TSTC airport in Waco, TX, and was handed over to the US Military. Congressman Chet Edwards was present for the ceremony. The stations website does not have a link to the video as of yet, however, I found an earlier sitation on the L3 web site

Lol. Something tells me this goes to the back of the pile, given the amount of models of CURRENT aircraft that still have'nt been done (B-52, CH-47, E-2C, EA-6B, F/A-18, HH-60, F-35....)

B-52 is already in the pipe.

CH-47 is already in the pipe.

F/A-18 is already in the pipe.

EA-6B is on its way out for the Growler so real need to pursue that model at this point.

F-35 won't be service for a few years so that's not even a real need.

H-60 would be nice since it is used by every branch in the US.

So the C-27 is a realistic goal... it is used internationally currently and will be used domestically soon by both USA and USAF.

USAF C-27

Post by starlifterfan »

I have a question?,does anybody know if there is a USAF repaint for Kazunori Ito's C-27?,..speaking of the C-27, AFSOC is setting it sights on a C-27J gunship. The AC-27J,now dubbed the the "Stinger" as an homeage to the Vietnam-era AC-119K gunship, will be a multi mission platform, equipped with full-motion video cameras and capable of covert infiltration-exfiltration as well as armed support from above....According to Brig.Gen.Bradley A Heithold,AFSOC'S director of plans, programs requirements, and assements, said the command sees the AC-27J as the solution to fulfill the requirements for the notional AC-XXX concept meant to replace the Air Force's aging and extensivley used AC-130 gunships..He also says the analysis of alternatives has pointed us to the C-27J as the most appropriate aircraft to use for this...he also said AFSOC has 17 AC-130U Spooky and eight AC-130H Spectre gunships in service. They need new avionics and many of them require new centerline wing boxes;thus there is urgency in getting a new platform on the ramp.

At first blush, it seems like a pretty good choice for AFSOC, gunship or no. It is short field T/O and Landing capable (land in 200 feet, don't know about t/o right now), with way more power available than required to just get in the air and go somewhere, using the same engines and props that are on the C-130J. Also, was designed to absorb small arms fire while on the ground doing drop offs and pickups (wounded, etc), goes pretty fast once in the air, pretty high too, and can (when empty of cargo etc) do barrel rolls with ease. Very impressive a/c, and absolutely the most up to date cockpit. I like it!

Great videos, motivates me even more to switch over to fly these having grown up watching C-130's at Little Rock AFB, and I thought they had great STOL performance.

We got the Lithuanian one at Kabul sometimes. Incredible how fast they stop after landing (and a pain if they still have to roll 6000 feet to the next available exit because everything else is blocked with unloading IL-76's  ).

PC 12 Crash and Ops info

Post by GZR_Sactargets »

From AF Daily Report 16 OCT 08

Pilot Error Caused PC-12 Crash: Failure on the part of an Air Force Special Operations Command instructor pilot to ensure "adequate time separation" between the PC-12 light transport aircraft that he was flying and a preceding AC-130 gunship led to the PC-12 flying into wake turbulence upon landing approach at Hurlburt Field, Fla., and crashing during a training sortie July 8, Air Force accident investigators have determined. According to the newly issued findings of the accident investigation board, the wake turbulence led to the pilot losing control of the aircraft. The crash caused "substantial damage" to the PC-12 and minor injuries to the three pilots aboard, including the instructor and two students. There was no evidence of any mechanical failure, the AIB said. AFSOC uses the PC-12 to shuttle special ops forces around within a theater

F-35 Beddown plans

Post by GZR_Sactargets »

From AF Daily Report 16 Oct 08

F-35 Beddown Shortlist?: Apparently the Air Force has placed Eielson AFB, Fla., on its shortlist of beddown locations for the F-35 stealth fighter, along with Hill AFB, Utah, Moody AFB, Ga., Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, and Shaw AFB, S.C. Eglin AFB, Fla., is apparently on the shortlist as the potential schoolhouse for the platform. The Air Force still has not announced this list publicly, but a report Oct. 14 in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner lays it out, based on what we understand to be accurate information. Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Mark Brown, told the Daily Report yesterday that he could not confirm the list. "We cannot get communities' hopes up until the list becomes final," he said. Meanwhile Lt. Frank Hartnett, spokesman for Eielson's 354th Fighter Wing, said, to his knowledge, the information presented in the Daily New-Miner article is correct (except for the minor point that it did not specify Eglin as the potential schoolhouse location). "This is certainly a promising development for the Eielson community," he told the Daily Report. "But it is important to have realistic expectations," he said and added, "Being on the list does not guarantee that the F-35 will come to Eielson." In January, the Air Force issued its future capabilities roadmap which listed these bases as part of the 41 potential homes to the F-35, expected to enter the Air Force's inventory in the early part of next decade. Once the shortlist is official, the process will proceed to assess the environmental impact of basing the F-35s at these preferred locations. For at least Eglin, there is some concern over the arrival of the F-35s, which some claim will be noisier than the base's current F-15s. In fact, the city of Valparaiso near Eglin filed suit against the Air Force in federal court earlier this year to obtain documents that might shed light on the noise. This led to a meeting between Air Force and Valparaiso officials earlier this month to discuss the release of information.
