This one hits a bit too close to home, one of my best friends is a pilot in this unit as well, prayers for Lt. Shively and his family :(

One soldier died and another was injured after the AH-64 Apache helicopter they were piloting crashed at McEntire Joint Air National Guard Base Sunday afternoon.

The soldier was identified as First Lt. Jonathan Shively, Jr, an AH-64 Apache helicopter pilot .

The second pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Roger Carpenter, was evacuated to an area medical facility immediately following the incident and is in stable condition.

The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. during a training exercise at the base.

Emergency workers reached the scene immediately, said Brig. Gen. Les Eisner, deputy adjutant general for the South Carolina National Guard.

The soldiers, both pilots, were finishing a weekend of training at the base, Eisner said.

“It has been many, many decades since we have had an AH-64 crash,” Eisner said at a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Eisner declined to release details about the crash, saying officials were investigating and he did not want to speculate what might have caused the crash.
