IRIS Harrier

Post by delbydoo »

Just been keeping busy over the last few night, creating a paintkit for the Iris Harrier GR9, and these are what I have come up with so far:

ZD406 in two liveries: 800/801 Sqn Naval Strike Wing joint colours & Fly Navy 100 scheme for the 2009 display season
ZD327 in its current Battle of Britain commemoration scheme

Still a bit more work to do, mainly cosmetic, like adding a bit of dirt around the exhausts etc; won't be too long, hopefully get these three out by tomorrow. Maybe I could adapt them for Nicks Harrier, hmmmmm......methinks

Nice shots mate :) I must admit you have got a better panel line finish on your repaitns then mine :)!! I have done a few 'Patch-work' harriers, well when these airframes were patchwork, they may have changed by now, lol :)

One the patch works, ZD376 '26':

..and the main 2010 Harrier Demo aircraft from, the now, 4(R) Sqn, RAF Wittering :)

Keep up the hard work with your paints mate 8) !!

Thanks Matt; the whole process is a learning curve - I used to just do panel lines, and not bother with any weathering, now this is the first time I have actually weathered my panel lines, and I will release these initially without any engine dirt, but that is another part of the process. Like your patchwork stuff, and the 4 Sqn ship is nice
I have picked a subject for my works - ZG501 which is currently with 41(R) Sqn here at Coningsby, as it originally started off with the S/AOEU at Boscombe and has several different sets of markings in both the grey and green colours (it also had the same markings as the one you have done above when with 4 Sqn). This is the first one:

I did try to upload them to Avsim last week, but apparently they have an issue with the latest version of winzip, so I'll have to upload with the old format this weekend; in the meantime, I shall upload this aand the others to a file sharing site, and everyone else will have to wait..... :P

Learning curve indeed :) I have starting working on the nozzles now, getting a more realistic look for there compared with the standard ones in the pack, I have a few more jets lined up to paint, namely 1(F) Sqn's BoB aircraft, ZD403 '32' :) I still have the Afghanistan harrier painted and sitting on my hard drive, lol :) I might upload mine when I have done a few more tweaks as it were :) Keep you the good work mate, they really are lookign great 8) !!

Thanks mate, agree about the nozzles, they could definitely do with a makeover - some nice layered, burnt steel look comes to mind...

Park the Iris Harrier next to one of Nick's AI Harriers and you'll see a bit of a surprise.

Hint: Nick got his right.....

Oh dear......... :|

Nicks model is on the left of each shot; at least Alphasim got the size "about" right, but the visual model is poorer than the Iris model in my opinion.......

Yup. I'm not real sure how a payware company dorks a model up that badly. (Well "payware" when I paid for it.)

Despite the elephantine Rooster-up over size, I decided to carry on painting, so here is ZG501 in an earlier incarnation

several more to come, these are all available on avsim.com (just click on my sig)

I love that model, one of my favs to fly, they got the STOVL part better than anyone else, just a shame about its size though.

UKMIL took over the hosting of the ALPHASIM GR7 when it became freeware; I believe they may have tweaked it and/or put a new panel in - not sure as I didn't download it, but they did produce the GR1/GR3/FRS1/FA2 and T-birds

Agree MIKE JG, just need some accurate USMC paints for the Iris. I flew the UKMIL/Alphasim model and used the RCBO VSTOL gauge designed for the model, no issues with VTOL, and even shipboard ops were somewhat accurate.

I'd echo Dustoff's comment on the RCBO VSTOL gauge. It makes VSTOL for the Iris Harrier effective to use on land and at sea. When practicing VSTOL, I take the fuel down to 70% left/right, 0 on Aux and 70% on externals and get good response. What would make flying these birds complete would be to have a visual of a Handler "Yellow Shirt" on the flight deck providing hand signals down to the spot on an LHA/LHD platform. Maybe someone can design something similar to the marshaller in some of the various payware airports that give left/right/forward hand signals.
