Air Force Rework Facilities???

Navy aircraft go into rework every so many years(aircraft dependent). We call them Depot's, Atsugi, Jacksonvlle, Cherry Point, Norfolk, North Island are locations of some of them, as well as some contractor facilities, we in the Navy send planes also to Greenville SC, Greenville, TX, Waco, TX for this as well.

The question what about the Air Force... Where are their's??? Any ideas???

For what it's worth, I've seen Air Force major airframes at TSTI in Waco, so that might be on your list for them as well as Navy.

I know F-16s go into "phase" at Hill AFB, UT. C-5s, C-130s, C-17s and F-15s get overhauled at Warner Robins AFB, GA. There's also a big facility at Lackland (Kelly AFB), but I'm not sure what their part of the picture is anymore.

The Air Force Material Command takes care of PDM or periodic depot maintenance. They currently have 3 major maintenance wings (MXW) located at:

Ogden Air Logistics Center at Hill AFB - A-10, C-130, F-16, LGM-30, LGM 118

Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center at Tinker AFB - B-1, B-52, C-135, E-3

Warner-Robins Air Logistic Center at Robins AFB - C-5, C-17, C-130, F-15

They also have AMARC which regenerates a/c from time to time.

These are supported by the various FLTS's and FLTF's that actually fly, test, and evaluate the a/c.




I'm pretty sure the current A-10A upgrade to A-10C is being done by the depot at Hill. Plus the C-5A upgrade to C-5M is being done at Robins.

Boeing provides depot level maintenance and logistics support for the KC-10 at it's facility at Kelly Field in Texas.

Northrop-Grumman performs PDM for the E-8 Jointstars at it's Lake Charles Maintenance and Modification Center (LCMMC) at the Chennault Airport in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Hmm...

P-3's in the Navy are on a PDM cycle (Though we call it Planned Depot Maintenance).

The rest of the fleet is on what is called SDLM (pronouced Sid-Lum, and is Scheduled Depot Level Maintenance.

The difference you may ask???

PDM, Plane goes in every 4 years period, no if's, and's, or but's.

SDLM. At the 4 year mark after the last SDLM, a team from Depot comes out and does a 365Day inspection. Depending on the out come of the inspection, the plane could either be returned to service, and in 365 days go through the inspection agian, or if it fails the inspection, it goes in for re-work.

P-3's are different because of the "No Two aircraft the same" theory. Bout 10-15 years ago, there were certain aircraft with "special mission gear' Well guess what? SDLM 365Day would come around, and inspectors would look the other way "Can't lose this aircraft from the fleet for 6 months". One of those aircraft 162998 which rolled off the line in 1986. It's first trip to Depot was in 1999. If it would have waited one more year to go the aircraft would have never wore the tactical gray paint. Now with HONA (Health Of Naval Aircraft) 998 being one of the "newest" in the fleet can only fly 54.7 hours a month, when most P-3's are set at 83.4 hours a month. Needless to say its one of the worst aircraft in the fleet.
