In 1968, Imperial Beach was raised to the status of a full Naval Air Station. Since 1975, it has been designated as Naval Outlying Field Imperial Beach. Today, it is known as the “helicopter capital of the world” and handles 95% of the training operations of the US West Coast Navy helo squadrons.
