Unable to post photos?

Post by EsKaihla »

I'm having trouble posting a thread to the photo forum with images (using the IMG tag). If I post a message without any images it goes fine, but as soon as I add the photos the submit gets stuck and, given enough time, will result in a blank white page being displayed. I have tried with both 5 and 10 images in the message and it does not seem to make a difference.

Your best bet would be to create an account with an image hosting site such as imageshack or photobucket and upload the photos there; they tend to provide their own links to the pictures that you wish to share on here, plus, IIRC that saves on bandwidth here :)

You are posting too many large photos for the forums to handle. I can't remember what the kb limit is for photos but it's not much.

As these guys are saying, to save on forum bandwidth we prefer you link your images to a third party site that is designed for that sort of thing.

Also helps the threads load much faster.

Thank you for your input, guys!

All the photos are located on my website (separate folder for forum posts as I usually do). All of them are 800x533 pixels and less than 200 Kb in size. I have posted here before in similar manner without any problems, few sample threads below:

Semper Fi - NAF Atsugi
Yokota AFB Friendship Festival 2010
First spottings of the new year / Hyakuri & Atsugi

I just gave it another try and included an IMG tag for just one photo, and it did get stuck the same way (just giving the "waiting for http://www.militaryaiworks.com... message in the status bar (I am using Firefox 3.6)) and eventually displaying a blank, white page (probably a time-out). If I remove the image tags, then the message gets posted normally.

Example of one image as I have entered in the forum post:

Code: Select all

C-9B Skytrain II (161529)
[img]http://wingnut.1g.fi/fsn/RJTAMayJun2011/161529_C9B_IMG_1738.JPG[/img]
All the photos I am trying to post are in here:
http://wingnut.1g.fi/fsn/RJTAMayJun2011/

Sorry to bother you guys with this, but I haven't been able to figure out what I am doing wrong.

Not a bother at all, we love seeing your pics.

I wonder if one of us recently changed a forum setting in the Admin section. Give us a few days to see who, if anyone, did what.

Definitely keep the pictures coming though!

Thanks Mike and Dan,

Appreciate your efforts, I have no intention of stopping to post photos, once I get this problem sorted. I tried a few more times, and once I actually got following message: "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."

I tried including the image size (800x533) into the image tag in few different ways, but those only resulted in the image tag not being recognized by the forum software. I tried following (used BBCode.org as a reference):

Code: Select all

[img=800x533]-Photo URL-[/img]
[img width=800 height=533]-Photo URL-[/img]

I also upgraded my Firefox to 4.01 but it didn't have any effect.

Have you tried with any other browser?

Yes, tried with IE (the only other browser I have), got the same message about unable to determine image dimensions. Pretty much the only thing left I haven't tried is to try posting from my wife's computer. Quite puzzling, as the images are processed the same way as before and there shouldn't be anything wrong with them as such.

I just tried to post one of your pictures from your links. Didn't work, got the same "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image." message.

So...........for whatever reason, the forum software cannot figure out how big the images are, the limit is 1000 pixels wide. That being the case, it's not going to let you post those photos from that link.

Do you have another link or another place you can post them to and then hotlink them??

Thanks for the info, Mike. Haven't got any alternative sites at this moment, I'll have to check if I can find some other place to upload them. It is indeed starting to look like that the problem is caused by the site my photos are located. They must have changed something there which prevents the forum software from finding out the image dimensions. I tried with one of the photos I had posted earlier on this forum and it gives the the same error, even though that very same photo is still visible on the thread which I posted in February.

Thank you for your help, guys! The images are now hosted elsewhere for forum use. I'll contact my website provider and ask if they can check and remedy the problem with their system for future use.
