Ah, that brings back some memories of Red Flag 02-4! Looks like there's cover over the revetments now, though?

You guys keep this up, and I will have completely replaced my AlphaSim Scenery. First, Lakenheath, then Langley. What's next?

Hi all,

I joined this site a couple weeks ago. Haven't been able to contribute anything yet, but I just saw this post about Nellis scenery/AI here. I don't know the current status of the project, but....

I'm retired E-8 Air Force living out here in Las Vegas now. I go to Nellis at least a couple times a month. I have a good relationship with the folks in the Base Ops section (I get complete new sets of the DoD Aeronautical Charts from them every couple months when the "old" ones expire and they are going to throw them away. They work great for my flight simming. Of course, I make a donation to their coffee and donut fund for their generosity. It works for me!).

Anyhow, if anybody would like some "recent" pictures of any of the structures on Nellis to help with the scenery design, I'd be glad to see what I could do. My trusty digital camera is available to take with me on any of my trips to Nellis. For instance...is the Thunderbirds hanger going to be part of the Nellis scenery? (Drool, drool!).

I've been hoping to find some good Nellis scenery for FS9. This project looks like it will be awesome when it is completed.

recon/Ian,

OK, I got the PM. I'll be going to Nellis either Thursday or Friday this week for some other stuff, so the camera is going with me this trip. Should have pics of the Thunderbird hanger for you this weekend. I'll take them in 1600 x 1200 resolution so you get good details to work with. File sizes will be kinda large, and many of the web's free picture hosting sites won't allow that large a file/resolution to be stored on them (they will automatically reduce the file/picture size). If you know of or use one that will, clue me in on it and I'll post them there and link to them here in a future post.

Are there any other buildings, structures, etc you want me to try and get pics of? I'm assuming you are mostly concerned with the adjacent flight line structures, but if there are any other things that would help, give me a list. Although I really can't imagine me taxiing my F-16 past the BX, Commissary, and brand new Burger King/Popeye's Chicken building on base. But ya never know just how "in-depth" these scenery designers wanna be sometimes.......

Rick. In ref: large files, you might want to check this out.

http://www.sendthisfile.com/

There are other similar sites out there, so just google. I have used this one on several occasions and had good luck and no problems. You will need an e-mail address for the destination, the site will send an e-mail to the receipient (that's probably not spelled right but bet you can figure it out) with a link to pick up the file. Just zip all pics into a single file and upload to this site. (You have to do a free registration first) You have to pay for extended services, but believe that you will be able to do what you want for free.

Rick,

Awesome news. Anything you can get will help us out. I plan on attending Aviation Nation coming up in November. So I'll be taking lots of pics then. But anything you could send us in the meantime would be great.

What really helps is to have high resolution images of the hangers and buildings. The closer to straight on from the front and sides the better. We can use the images themselves to texture the objects giving them a "photorealistic" look.

Really looking forward to anything you share. I'm also really looking forward to the airshow this year, will be my first at Nellis.

Mike,

OK, based on your reply above and some of the PMs I also got, I'm going to approach this in a little different manner than I originally planned. I'm going out to Nellis tomorrow and I'm going to talk to the Nellis Public Relations Office. I'm going to take a partial copy of this thread with me including some of the pics here of the hanger development done already. I'm hoping that after explaining everything we are trying to do, I just might get permission to be escorted out on the flightline in an "official" manner to get the kind of pictures that would work best for us. This seems like a better approach, as any picture taking I do would be "approved" and meet any guidelines Nellis has concerning security, etc. My experience has been that if I approach it this way, the PR and Security folks will normally work with you. Being retired E-8 won't hurt either, as they will know I'm approaching them this way because of my concerns about making sure I don't jeopardize any security issues they might have in place.

I'll let you all know what happens tomorrow evening with a new post here.

OK, from the "Good News, Bad News" department (or..."I've done some really stupid things before, but this ranks right up there with most of them.")

Good News: I went to Nellis today and talked to the PR office. The girl I talked to said she thought what I was asking could be worked out, but the person I really needed to talk to wouldn't be back until Monday. So I gotta call back Monday and see what picture taking arrangements I can make. She did say that I could take any pictures I wanted for now as long as I didn't cross any restricted areas or shoot anywhere any signs said "No Cameras Allowed." So.....

Bad News: I went to the road along the flightline hangers. Parked my car across the street from the T-Bird hanger. Took my trusty camera out and turned it on. It lasted for about 30 seconds before the battery died. DOH! I never thought to check the battery charge before I left my house. So "Numb-Nuts" here didn't get any pics for you today...after making the 45-mile round trip to Nellis and back (I live on the South side of Vegas).

I will endeavor to prevent making such a stupid repeat performance in the future. I'll call the PR office Monday then plan on making another trip out to Nellis next week.

I'm afraid to run FS9 tonight. I'd probably forget to put fuel in the plane the way today went.
