Not really a painting tip, but quite a useful tool for previewing and converting images can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/sagethumbs/ it'll show dxt files as thumbnails in win 7 and also allow a larger preview with a simple right click option. Certainly quicker than firing up DxtBmp for a quick look at a texture. Been using it for quite a while now with no issues.
