FSX and White AI

Post by BadPvtDan »

So...I know these are silly questions and have been answered years ago but...why are they all white at distance? It seems like at the farther LODs they have no textures.
Thanks.

Thats just how it is
LODs work differently I believe.

Btw if you want it I made a new alpha channel for the JB AI P-3 so the prop looks better in FSX. You've probably already done the necessary though, if you have P-3s in your sim.

Here we go, just add it to the prop texture and you're away ;)

You'll get there eventually :D. Just be careful with the French Rafale package-the CDG causes CTDs in FSX, so you need the FSX native version.

Yeah, right click the picture and save.

Dan, I get the white aircraft at distances quite often. the higher res screen you have the worse it is. What I believe is happening is that the distance that FSX changes LODs are actually closer to you than the FS9 ones. It maybe simply be a case that you have always had it it's just that now you notice it.

We had a post on this in the FSX thread, I've noticed with different changes and I guess something I will have to live with. Now need to figure out why I have one black HTAI F-16 on the ramp at Nellis.

Check what scheme is the problem and then see if there is an alpha layer applied to the scheme.

I believe that is the cause of these things.

Or the texture is missing. I get it all the time when I mislabel things.

Some good suggestions above. Try to identify which aircraft it is then get that a/c in AI view and see if it's white, if it is then it's probably a mis-labelling error.

Personally I think it's more likely the way FSX handles LODs; as I understand it FSX does it differently than FS9 and therefore displays a white (untextured) model at ranges which in FS9 display a texture.

I've noticed this and the effect is different for different models, so I think the issue lies somewhere in the design or compiling of the model. As there are very few (if any) models compiled solely for FSX, or even ones re-compiled for FSX, then the issue will persist. I'm not even sure it's possible to re-complie an FS9 model using an FSX-compatible compiler. I'll leave that to others far more knowledgable than myself.

As ever, all flying simulators are compromises.
