MGAI KC-10
MGAI KC-10
Well taking a page and some advice from the others, a nice distraction from trying like crazy to get all the angles just right on that Aegis Destroyer, I thought I'd start on another project. Since we can't seem to get permission to use Charles Dayhuff's AI KC-10, I thought I'd take it on as my first aircraft. Plus we can use much of the gained knowledge from the group to give it some special features (extending boom in flight hint, hint).
So here's a couple hours worth of work. The KC-10 doesn't have too many crazy shapes so it's a good project to start with for me.

Ya I figure that since there's only two bases with KC-10's it should be easy enough to do them all in just one or two packages. Also will have to leave it as a straight DC-10 model as well since the there are some in use by other miltaries around the world. Belgium has a couple in use I think.btaylo24 wrote:Mike
Looking good...We will have to do that KC10 package we discussed once this is out. Just need a C5 for a nice package
I will get my KC10's FP out of storage!

Nop, only the Netherlands use these KDC-10's and i don't know any other operator...Ya I figure that since there's only two bases with KC-10's it should be easy enough to do them all in just one or two packages. Ahh the Dutch, that's right. Saw one of those up in Montreal the other week. It was parked over at the terminal for some reason. Anyways here's an interesting way of comparing your model for size and dimensions. Just use the slew and morph it into an existing model and you get an idea where things are at.
This is morphed into the Charles Dayhoff model.

Yea everthing is pretty close except for the height of the tail for some reason is quite a bit off.

Did quite a bit of reworking tonight. Reworked the horizontal stabilizers and main wings. Redid the fuselage as well. Trying to keep that poly count as low as I can. Threw some basic texturing on it for some flavor.
Current FSDS v3 poly count is 1826 x Rysiek's coversion factor of 1.8=3287 !! Lots of tweaking still to do. Hopefully I'll lose a bunch of those when I redo the engines.

The dutch have 2 KDC-10's as they are named here.
Both are converted DC-10-30's that have recieved remote controlled boom operation modificationsas well as glass cockpit screens.
They are used as Tanker as well as Trooptransport aircraft.
They still have the normal seating configuration of the DC-10-30.
Recently a third DC-10-30 has been purchased with a 4th airframe used for spare parts ( still located in the USA)
If you guys need any info on the dutch KDC-10's let me know.

Thanks for the info Tom. I'm sure someone will pick those up in a package eventually. So they do, or they do not have a refueling boom on the back?

OK poly count is back under control after reworking the engines. Now sitting just under 2400 with the conversion factor.
Open question to any of the modelers: What's the best way to make the flight control surfaces? Cut them out of the wing, etc. with a boolean operation or just make a copy of the wing, tail, etc. and then delete all but the parts that would be controls and then delete those segments from the original part and add the copied ones back in as seperate parts.

I do too. Boolean makes too many polygons...although it reflects the realityRipPipPip wrote:I prefer much that one:MIKE JG wrote:... just make a copy of the wing, tail, etc. and then delete all but the parts that would be controls and then delete those segments from the original part and add the copied ones back in as seperate parts.
