AFX, FSX and Vista question

Post by Ford Friendly »

I've been running into a problem that hopefully someone else has experience with.

I'm using FSX and AFX to do some basic scenery stuff. The problem is that exclusion rectangles made in AFX only sometimes work - and sometimes when some are working, others are not.

Anyone heard of a solution to this?

BTW, my OS is Vista.. I have a vague recollection of someone somewhere saying they had seen this problem - with AFX and Vista.

Normally Ford I would leap in and help, but as I don't have FSX I can't help here, and so far Vista is still a greater distance than a barge pole away.

I'm afraid AFX does exclusions in a most unsatisfactory way by using invisible objects. This can cause all sorts of difficulties as you have discovered. There are two freeware alternatives which do not do this, ADE and FSX Planner.

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't downloaded the totally unofficial "invisible object mod" (http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_p ... ?TID=22390) from the Simforums.com site as this seemed to be an unsatisfactory work around - why stick "objects" into a scenery where you might be forced to turn off crash detection due to the objects location? It doesn't seem (to me, at least) that "straight" (officially upgraded to v1.4, not unofficially modded) AFX does use invisible objects as **somethimes** the exclusion rectangles worked exactly as expected, sometimes not.

ADE and FSX Planner have their own issues from what I can tell - at least on my system. Both work less smoothly and crash more often on my system.

I guess I'll have to buckle down and learn SbuilderX or something.

Thanks again.

Both ADE and FSX Planner are still Beta but a new release of ADE is imminent.

Ford,

Have you reported your ADE issues on the ADE support forum at FSDeveloper?

Nope.. I haven't as I committed to AFX rather than ADE or FSX Planner a while back.

I did try ADE and FSXPlanner for about a week each, ran into some system slow downs/memroy issues with both and then chose to stick with AFX.

Maybe you want to have a look at the new release of ADE anyway. It has taken a very major step forward.

I might do that. Actually , AFX is a great program.. other than the exclusion rectangle problem I mentioned. I can run it and/or Instant Scenery simultaneously with FSX and FSEarth/Google to do pretty much any basic scenery design I want to attempt right now.
