At my white-sand beaches right now... the high waves washed up on the beaches and cut the highway to Destin off. So people had to go to Destin obviously different routes. Becuase of this a toll bridge near me has decided not to make people pay in order to smooth out the traffic flow.

US highway to and from Destin is open, both westbound lanes, and one eeastbound lane. The other eastbound lane is closed for a short length. Got it from here

Well, the news says that the track of Ike will be along the I-45 now instead of the I-35, and that we can expect only 4-6" of rain and 35-50 mph sustained winds. That is enough to at least knock out the electricity for a while, and maybe squash a few things with fallen trees etc, but doesn't look as if it will be all that bad, so Danny can stay home and ride it out - maybe he should pick up a few of those famous Round Rock donuts - mmm' good.

On a more crass note, I can't help but think of what will happen as this 'cane hits the Galvaston Bay area (will almost certainly kill those who think they can live near the seawall and ride this one out-there are a few such fools-the serge is expected to be a couple of feet over the seawall, and there is nothing to slow the water down over there), but also, I can't help but think about the irreplaceable historical items, both near the Galvaston piers, at Sea Wolf Park, and the Lonestar Flight Museum (hope they managed to fly most of the restored a/c out of there, but there are others - some very rare - that are in restoration and not going to be moved which may be lost.

In addition, the storm is thought to move directly up the Houston ship channel. What becomes of the Battleship Texas? This is the only example of an American battleship built prior to WWI (1913 I think) - not including the Olympia, which looks like a Monopoly piece - and is pre-Spanish American War. The Battleship Alabama rode out Hurricane Frederick in '79 with only some damage to the above deck displays, and I hope this portends well for USS Texas. We will know the answers to these questions, probably in just over 24 hours. If I lose electric, I won't know for days.
