Re: JYAI Jet Provost and Strikemaster

If you look on YouTube the entire 1980s BBC series called Fighter Pilot is available. Fascinating look at the how the RAF was, especially turning "blokes" into Officers and Gentlemen. Lots of JP footage too. I was very much part of Linton when the Beeb began filming this series, though I left not l...

Re: JYAI Jet Provost and Strikemaster

Yes, the Herc sims when I first started had the model-based visuals. We had four sims; one had Madirah, one Kai Tak, one Lyneham and I think the last was Akrotiri. The entire sim complex was replaced in around 1981 with full-motion 6-degree freedom boxes, with computer-based nighttime visuals. I thi...

Re: RAF Brawdy 1979-1992 to FSX?

I have that version working fine in P3Dv4. All I did was recompile it in ADE, and move and lower it slightly to align better with Orbx Wales. Be aware that if you use Orbx True Earth GB South, it won't work - the photoreal layer will always override the third-party scenery.

Re: JYAI Jet Provost and Strikemaster

John, I have the Yorkshire 4 working fine in P3Dv4, so there should be no problem there. I might have a look at Finningley this week while I'm out of the country; I was based there from August 87 to November 91 as QFI/CFI on Yorkshire UAS, so I remember it very well. I have lots of pictures of our e...

ref scenery, RAF Little Rissington, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, RAF Leeming, RAF Brawdy and RAFC Cranwell are available As are Church Fenton, Dishforth, Barkston Heath and Topcliffe. Manby and Strubby are also available for 1970s enthusiasts. I've done my own St Davids. I haven't found {or made} a good FSX...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

Yes, if your chosen period is right at the end of the JP’s service life, you obviously are restricted in the paintschemes that apply - though I have to say that the RAF got a lot more colourful after the Cold War! Most of my RAF time was notable for fairly dull colour schemes, until the Gulf War all...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

In deciding what new models to tackle, maybe it would be useful to designate some periods to cover the grouping of aircraft types and versions? It would seem that there's a fairly strong interest in the 1980s (Cold War) period - one for which you, John, have supplied several AI aircraft. In the cont...

Re: A brand new MS Flight Simulator is coming...

I understand the purpose of this beta isn’t to rejuvenate that old program, but to exploit that large remaining user base to test a few things that may make it into FS20. This reinforces the suggestion that some parts of the code may allow a (small?) degree of backwards compatibility in the new sim.

Re: ADE airport fails to obscure stock airport

Hi Steve. Yes, this is a mod of the stock airport - and of course, you’re right, I think that’s the issue. It’s not a path I usually take when designing a field! I’ll have a look when I’m next in UK and able to access my PC. Serves me right for getting distracted while trying to sort out other issue...

ADE airport fails to obscure stock airport

I’ve just built a new PC and have installed P3D afresh, so I’m gradually rebuilding the sim. In the process of trying to sort out an Orbx library problem (now sorted), I was using CYOW to work from. Just for fun, I added a few items in ADE (jetways, a few buildings, and sorted out the runway/taxiway...

Click on the (tiny!) link in the far bottom right of the default window. It’s called ‘activate’ or something like that. You’ll need to enter the order details in the following dialogue, then you’ll be sorted.

Re: RAF C-130 FPs

I have written some of my own - got them somewhere, but I'm in the midst of rebuilding my P3D installation on a new PC. If I can find them, I'll post them here. Not FS9, of course, but they at least could be rewritten for the legacy sim.

Demotivation, to the point of chucking it in, affects us all eventually. The risk for me is not the 99.7% of users who download and never utter a word, but the potential dwindling of the 0.3% who do have the courtesy to interact. So long as I can confirm that what I’m doing is worthwhile and I’m no...

A new announcement by Microsoft (according to Fly Away Simulation): now they've taken back responsibility for FSX, they're issuing an FSX Beta test to data-gather for elements of the new sim. The relevant info is here: https://flyawaysimulation.com/news/4953/#fsxbeta This paragraph is interesting......

We used to overnight at Thule. The hangars are heated, including the floors - though there is a funny story about one hangar sinking after they discovered the floor wasn't sufficiently insulated so it melted the permafrost under the hangar!

The 109th often operates from Thule AFB, Greenland, operating to several ice/snow strips around Arctic Canada and within the Arctic icesheet. I don't have any up-to-date info, but it's a lot closer to most people's area of interest than McMurdo is!

Re: A brand new MS Flight Simulator is coming...

I don't doubt for a minute that a new model for providing game content will throw up new technical challenges. As this community's continued engagement with FS9 shows, the advent of new technology does not invalidate existing stuff. We'll start to get an idea of how well this will work within the ne...

Re: A brand new MS Flight Simulator is coming...

Even the free WiFi in my hotel here in Atlanta is 60-80mbps. I have 200+ at home in Suffolk, but I’ve seen over 1Gb/s here. And it’s probably improving faster than MS can use. Bing/Google/Apple maps will stream HD full 3D satellite imagery quite happily at 10-15mbps, so I doubt you’ll need an outrag...
