Re: Air Force One/Marine One schedule

If you are creating flight plans for P3Dv5, make sure AIFP is set to that sim (you'll need the latest version). Lockheed Martin changed quite a lot of airfield designators from the FSX/FS9 generation that was used until P3Dv4, and if you compile for anything other than P3Dv5, you may find your traff...

Re: Finningley 1990s P3Dv4

Lindholme was still the RLG for Finningley when I was doing Multi-Engine Training in 1980. Northern Radar was still operating its Type 82 then, but had gone by the time I returned on YUAS in 1987 (I think it folded in 1984). By then, Lindholme had largely been turned over to the Home Office and the ...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

I can't answer those questions - I've never looked at Materialize or XNormal, and I'm not up to speed on PBR. I was just interested in whether you could do it. Ambient Occlusion is something I'd dearly love to do in SketchUp, but it's pretty much impossible. That's why I promised myself I'd learn Bl...

Re: Norton AFB

I think have about 12,000 on various Airbus, fairly evenly split between the A340-300, A340-600 and A330-300 with a few (maybe 1000) on the A330-200. I really must get around to putting them all in the same place so I can add them up! The -600 arrived at Virgin just as I moved from the 747, so I fle...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

John, how does working in GMax square with using PBR textures? Or are you going to steer clear of those for now?

Just went and had a look on Google Earth, and found one of my A340-600s being broken up there. That's spoiled my day!

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

Fixed it. The airfield background exclude poly is actually interfering with the ADE-generated CVX airfield background. This is different from the behaviour in FSX-P3Dv4. I've now got the MAIW airfield working at 8.5m with a flat background. Edit: correction. No I haven't - something got a bit crosse...

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

Chris, having spent some time on Beaufort yesterday, I found that 11.5m (38ft) was the lowest I could pitch it at and not get issues with the runways disappearing. It's a shame, as with the Orbx mesh installed, 8.5-9m (28-32ft) would look much better, but that gets 14-32 underground, and loads of ba...

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

I'm sorry, I think you've misunderstood my message. I'm not criticising you; I'm just saying that I can't legally provide you with the ready-made solution for your problem, even though I have solved the problem myself. I would love to, but it's not allowed. That's why I suggest you have a go at ADE....

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

Yeah, OK - understood. It's not OK to share with you the work I've done, as I've modified someone else's work without their permission. It may be that the MAIW Elders would allow it to be shared via the Hangar, but to do it justice would need a complete new AFD, and the buildings relocated (and one ...

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

Having looked a bit closer at KNBC, you also need to make a specific exclusion for the default airfield flatten. The airfield covers more than one terrain tile, so the best way is to create an airfield background (CVX) then copy it and change the copy to 'exclude specific - flatten maskclassmap auto...

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

Do you know how to use Airfield Design Editor? A CVX file is the part of the airfield configuration in the Scenery folder that describes the airfield background and flatten area. The world mesh in P3Dv5 is different from that in v4, so quite a few FSX to P3Dv4 airports don't work 'out of the box' in...

Re: MCAS Beaufort KNBC Install

Which version of P3D?

In P3Dv5, I cured this by creating a CVX file and changing the airfield altitude to 12m. That places an ALT stub in the scenery/world scenery folder and overrides the default terrain, which often causes problems for third-part airfields in v5.

Re: FSX and converting from 9 to X

Much FS9 scenery will work perfectly well in FSX. My advice is to try it before you muck about with it! There are some things that you will find that you may not be able to correct: textures laid on top of each other will flash or fluctuate between the two, and there's not a lot you can do about tha...

Re: P3Dv5 is here.

The basic process of converting FD9 airfields to v5 is similar to doing so for FSX-P3Dv4. You'll need to get rid of the VTxx files and replace them with a CVX. However, exclusions in the pre-V5 airfields may well not work for v5 - especially v5.2/5.3. To tackle this, open your airfield in ADE 1.79 i...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

Don't think you can register GMax at Turbosquid any more - there's some info there that says they were 'asked' to withdraw it. I believe there is a workaround, but I don't know what it is. Hopefully it doesn't involve buying 3DsMax! I could live without animations like moving pilots heads. That's ve...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

I have to say I don't understand the premise that P3D requires a whole new learning curve as a user. Frankly, that's rubbish! Its folder structure is exactly the same as FS9 and FSX, and, at almost every level, the settings and controls are so similar as to be indistinguishable. The UI is different,...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

It would be a shame to see MAIW become simply a repository for FS9-era sceneries and aircraft and conversions thereof for FSX/P3D. The incredible work done by John and others needs to be seen in the best possible environment - as shown by the recent screenshots of his Typhoons in MSFS. MSPG's Valley...

Re: Thoughts on the next project

Yes, DCS is definitely primarily for piloting and in that, it is superb. The move to a whole-world model rather than individual, bounded theatres opens it up to at least the possibility of 'free' AI - it already has constrained AI in abundance for the campaigns. How much that could be adapted for ou...
