Anyone try the new RAF bases scenery on avsim?

Post by Joseph29 »

On avsim there is new scenery for Fairford, Lyneham, Marham, Mildenhall, Burtonwood, Bentwaters, and Woodbridge. Has anyone tried any of these sceneries? How are they? There is no screenshots of any of the sceneries and they use a exe to install them so I don't really want to run the exe if I don't know what I am getting.

The scenery is made by a group called Team SDB

I bought their Wattisham scenery last year and was very impressed with it; a lot of work went into them and it was good quality. Cannot comment on the ones you mention, but if that is anything to go by, you probably won't go wrong.

If I remember correctly "Team SDB" is the splinter scenery arm of what used to be Alphasim, now Virtavia. Their sceneries used to be pay ware. For a time I got a very small kick back for them using my FS9 AI B-1B in a package.

Well, seeing as Mildenhall was updated recently by our very talented team, I thought I would see how TSDB's Hall would compared - and the answer is very poorly. This looks like very much older scenery for FS2002 - the terminal building is practically non-existant. Stick with MAIW. It pays off. :D

Thumbs up for releasing them as freeware, although they do look a bit dated by todays (especially MAIW) standards. At least it's an alternative to not having any scenery at all :)

I might try the Fairford, as Dave Morgan's freeware one just does not show up for me. Plenty of objects in a field but that is it.
I don't think that anybody here has made an EGVA enhancement so I might as well try this one.

Another round of sceneries have hit AVSIM:
Al Taqaddum (Iraq)
Groom Lake
Ice Station Alpha (Fictional, I guess?)
NAS Fallon
Nellis AFB
NAS Pensacola (All three been done by MAIW IIRC?)
RNAS Yeovilton
Tonopah Test Range

I recognise some of them as the old Alphasim payware products by Mike Dews and as such are quite ancient and quite below the standard we are used to.

Bentwaters and Woodbridge scenery by ACG are superior to anything else I have seen, so for sure I would go for these instead of the ones by Team SDB...

Just in case anybody else gets something like this I will put this info out there.
Like I said earlier, I couldn't get Dave Morgans EGVA scenery to show up. I eventually tracked it down to the old Alphasim St Mawgan scenery by Mike Dews.
I have no idea what they used to do to block out scenery hundreds of miles away.

So if anybody finds any St. Mawgan scenery enhancement could they let me know.

That looks like a fairly easy base to do something with. FS9 or FSX?

You know me, Dan. Stuck in the timewarp that is FS9, as opposed to the timewarp that is FSX.

It is pretty gruesome.
I would like to have somewhere nice to put Brian's Nimrods and JY's Canberras plus some fighters. So if anybody finds something it would be most appreciated.
You never know maybe some civvie stuff will infect the place as well.
