A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

News flash: US and UK subs have been sailing in Russian waters for decades undetected.

Maybe they were thinking of defecting;
"It reminds me of the heady days of Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin when the world trembled at the sound of our rockets. Now they will tremble again - at the sound of our silence. The order is: engage the silent drive"

Just because the navy didn't know it was there doesn't mean no one knew it was there...

You guys do realise that sometimes it's advisable to let people think they have found a weakness when you actually know they are there all along.
Subs are difficult to find but a lot easier if you know where they go.

I think this is hogwash! This sub would have been tracked since leaving it's homeport either by our own subs or by the SOSUS network.
Back when I was active duty our daily ops/intel brief showed the location of all forces.

No kidding, they even got rid of the P-3s in New Orleans back in 2005, so no ASW assets in the Gulf of Mexico at all.maddog65 wrote:I think this is hogwash! This sub would have been tracked since leaving it's homeport either by our own subs or by the SOSUS network.

Well we know it didn't get within 50 miles of the Florida coastline, it's too shallow until you drop off of the continental shelf.
