In 1992 the RAF decided to paint all its training Hawks black, the reason for this was to cut down on accidents and to make the planes stand out more clearly against the sky..

The season of 93 is upon us and adapting the new black scheme, the design was quite simple, they advertised the RAF Station and year on the side of the Hawk in a golden Yellow text, along with a big red Dragon Rampant holding a Portcullis on the tail.

1994 witnessed the arrival of a Hawk in the markings of a new unit to the display circuit, namely Chivenor-based 92(R) Squadron, whose display aircraft appeared in an attractive blue and white scheme recalling that applied to its last Phantom three years before.. RAF Valley's offering was XX334 in a watered down version of the previous year's scheme, minus lettering, with toned down (pale blue/pink) roundels but retaining the red dragon on the fin.

Absolutely stunning mate - however......(sorry got to point it out) this baby is from 19 Sqn. But IIRC both squadrons had a blue display machine.

In October 1994, following several years of cutbacks to the RAF's frontline, the single surviving OCU at Chivenor was closed and the Hawk force concentrated at RAF Valley in three squadrons; 19, 74 and 208 (Reserve). In 1995 the only Hawk on the display circuit was that of 74(R) Squadron, which had XX235 and XX244 painted in a striking black and yellow scheme with the Welsh dragon on the fin. This was a combination of the previous 2 years, However, it was to be the last one to be seen for some years as the ongoing modification programme was severely stretching the Hawk fleet to the point where none could be spared for the display seasons!

After an absence of 6 years the hawk was finally able to grace the skies at the airshows once more, the Hawk had now been in service for 25 years at RAF Valley and it was also RAF Valleys 60th Anniversary and to celebrate this 2 Hawks XX309 and XX320 where both painted for the occasion, the two examples wore a scheme of grey streamers on the now standard black with the Hawk's twenty-fifth (on the port side of the fin) and RAF Valley's sixtieth (on the starboard side).

2002 saw the return of XX244 wearing a very similar scheme to what she had worn in 1995 minus the red dragon on the tail but now featuring the 208 Sqn eye of horus badge, a flash and a No 244 at the top of the tail, unfortunately due to technical problems the display bird was not to be seen much that year..

Isn't that the way when you paint a special scheme.

On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. The year of 2003 celebrated 100 years of flight, and to commemorate this 2 Hawks from 100 Sqn (XX250 and XX314) featured a special 100 years of flight badge on the fuselage just behind the cockpit on an overall Gloss black finish...

In 2004 2 Hawks (XX219 and XX261) from RAF Valley wore a special half-Union flag on the tail and a logo on the intake to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Hawk's maiden flight.

2005 sees one of my most favorite but simple schemes to be worn by a Hawk to date, again sticking with an all over gloss black the Hawk had a bright yellow and red set of flames on the nose and a yellow dragon on the tail, a similar scheme was worn a few years before on a privately owned Hunting/BAC Jet Provost G-BWGT..
